Covid-19 cases due to the Omicron variant continue to increase world-wide. The good news does seem to be that the severity of illness, especially for people who are vaccinated, is less than with previous variants, though Omicron is more easily transmitted. There are several steps we can take to help keep ourselves and our loved ones safe and well during this time.
The most important thing to do is to get vaccinated and if you are already vaccinated, to get a booster. Please be sure to speak with your physician to make your vaccination plans. Masks remain an important line of defense against Covid and current information suggests that masks like KN95, KF94, or N95 work best against the Omicron variant. You could also double-mask. You should mask when indoors, in a group setting, when going about your errands, or with others not from your own household.
Testing is another important tool to help decrease the spread of Omicron. If you have symptoms, even mild ones, consider getting tested right away. In some places, this may be most easily accomplished by an at-home rapid test. You can always reach out to your doctor’s office for their advice about where to go for testing, as well as for the most up to date quarantine and isolation guidelines in your community. You should also get tested before and after traveling and before and after in-person gatherings. Stay home if you don’t feel well, even if your symptoms are mild.
If you are getting together with others outside your family, move the gathering outdoors if possible. If not, open windows and doors. Older adults and those who are at higher risk should also consider curtailing optional activities.
Some of the Information above was adapted from the New York City Department of Health.
Please stay safe and wash your hands!
Shabbat Shalom,
Mindy Steinholz, MD

On Tu B'Shevat, known as the New Year for the Trees, (which is observed this year on Monday, January 17, 2022), it is traditional to enjoy the "seven species,” wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olive oil, and dates. According to the Torah, these foods made ancient Israel’s agriculture very special. Each member of the seven species also represents something unique.
|
|
Wheat represents chesed, kindness, because it is so nourishing and accessible.
Barley is the embodiment of gevura, restraint, due to its thick hull.
Grapes signify tiferet, beauty, due to their color and manner of growing.
Figs represent netzach, endurance, for their lengthy ripening stages.
Pomegranates symbolize hod, majesty or glory, for their crown shape.
Olive oil represents yesod, foundation, for the staple role that the ingredient plays in many foods.
Dates denote malchut, kingdom, thanks to their digestive benefits.

Discovering and Sharing our Genetic Information
Who isn’t curious about what our genes can tell us?
Jews are among the best customers for direct-to-consumer genetic tests and their packaged analysis. Are they useful, or confusing?
We also have well-studied variants for certain diseases, owing to our ancestors having lived and married in tight-knit communities.
When is it advisable for us to seek medical genetic testing? What is the genetics counselor’s role? If we do find that we carry a “bad” gene, what’s next?
Should we fear the potential for discrimination against us individually and as a people from all this genomic disclosure?
From a wider lens, how do the frontiers of genetic science intersect with bioethics and Jewish standards? And might the discovery of our genetic information and lineage confound our understanding of Jewish identity?
These and other probing questions will be explored by two experts in their respective fields:
